Edible Schoolyard NYC

Brooklyn, NY

Founded by Alice Waters, Edible Schoolyard is a an organization that brings food education to K-12 schools. The buildings at PS216 and PS7 are the first two showcase sites for Edible Schoolyard in New York. With WORK Architecture Company, Maggie Tsang led design and construction of Edible Schoolyard PS216 in Gravesend, an open site; and Edible Schoolyard PS7 in Harlem, a denser urban infill and rooftop site. This included extensive collaboration with the New York City School Construction Authority, the Department of Design and Construction, Edible Scholyard’s gardeners and board members, and the school’s principal, teachers, and students. At each pilot site, a key set of program elements is translated and adapted to specific urban conditions: a kitchen classroom is paired with a custom greenhouse, rainwater cistern, toolshed, and edible garden. The two sites are also connected through their playful use of color and signature patterned shingle facade.
